The Complete Football Tryouts Guide: How to stand out and make the leap to professional football
If you are here, it is because you have the talent and you are looking for the opportunity. But in modern football, talent without preparation is invisible. Football trials are the entry door, and also the toughest filter.
In this guide we break down what scouts are really looking for, the different paths you can take and how to avoid the empty promises of the industry.
1. What are semi-professional football trials really?
Unlike a summer camp, a trial at a semi-professional club is total immersion. You are not there to be taught; you are there to prove you already know.
- The dynamic: You train as one more member of the official squad for a few days or weeks.
- The pre-filter: Clubs do not waste time. Before inviting you, they usually ask for a sports CV and a highlights video.
- The end goal: If you show your level, the prize is a federative licence. Being in a semi-professional club automatically puts you on the radar of higher-tier scouts and FIFA agents.
Pros and Cons of this path
Advantage
Disadvantage
Direct visibility: You are in the real shop window of football.
Required level: Not for beginners; you need a competitive base.
More accessible: Easier to get in here than in a top-flight academy.
High pressure: You have only a few days to convince the coach.
Cost: Usually cheaper than going through a high-performance academy first.
No guarantees: Football is subjective and depends on the club’s needs.
2. The 5 Pillars to pass a football trial successfully
Recruiters do not only look at whether you score goals or win the ball back. They look for a 360° profile. Here is what to polish before showing up:
Technical preparation (the base)
Do not try to pull off the play of your life every time you touch the ball. Scouts look for oriented control, accuracy in short and long passing, and decision-making under pressure.
Tip: Work on your weaker foot. A two-footed player doubles their chances of being picked.
Tactical preparation (the intelligence)
What do you do when you don’t have the ball? Your positioning and reading of the game say more about you than a dribble. Study your position by watching pros who play it and show that you understand when to press and when to drop.
Physical preparation (the engine)
If you are gassed after 20 minutes, your technique disappears. Selectors value explosiveness and aerobic endurance. Important: good fitness reduces the risk of injuries, something clubs value to protect their investment.
Mental preparation (the X factor)
Fear of failure is your worst enemy. Nerves block talent. Practice visualisation and mindfulness. Show resilience: if you lose the ball, sprint to win it back. Scouts love the never-give-up mentality.
Behaviour and attitude
Football is a team sport. A toxic player who shouts at teammates or shows up late is dropped immediately, no matter how good. Be the first to arrive and the last to leave.

"Talent opens doors. Preparation keeps them open."
3. The Hard Truth: What are your chances of going pro?
It is tough to read, but you need to know it to choose your path well:
<1%
of kids in European academies make it to the elite
1,4%
of NCAA college players turn professional
5/6
pros under contract at 16 are no longer playing at 21
Why do they fail? Lack of maturity, injuries, extreme competition or dropping out of school. That is why the "short" path is not always the best.

4. Paths to success: which one to choose?
A. The Direct Path (Agents and Scouts)
Agents: Useful if you are already semi-professional. Warning: Never pay an agent up front who promises “magic trials”. Look for FIFA-licensed agents.
Invitations: They come if you stand out in your local league. The ideal path, but the hardest to control.
B. The Private Trials Path
Many companies organise drafts. Be critical: many sell smoke. At Ertheo we only work with trials at academies and clubs we have personally audited to make sure the scout is really watching.
C. The Safe Path: High-Performance Academies (Recommended)
This is the “long path” that delivers the best mid-term results.
Success cases: Players like Oliver Torres or Diego Kochen went through high-level training structures before shining.

FAQ and Logistics: prepare like a pro
What exactly should I bring to a football trial?
Don’t expect the club to provide everything. Your “toolkit” says a lot about your professionalism. You should include:
- Proper boots: Bring boots for natural grass and for artificial grass (AG). Never break in new boots on the day of the trial.
- Kit: Comfortable clothing, shin pads (mandatory) and spare socks.
- Hydration and nutrition: Your own water bottle and a light snack (fruit or bar).
- Documentation: Original ID or passport and valid private medical insurance or federative licence.
What is the age limit for a trial?
The market moves in windows of opportunity:
- 14 to 18: Golden age to enter elite academies.
- 18 to 23: Focus shifts to semi-professional or US college football.
- 23+: Harder to get in via “open trial”. Clubs usually look for proven CVs.
I’m a foreign player: can I trial in Spain or Europe?
- Tourist visa: You can do trials and training (usually 90 days).
- The signing: If the club wants to sign you, you’ll need an international transfer certificate. If you are under 18, FIFA rules are very strict.
- The solution: The most legal and safe route is to enrol in a High-Performance Academy with a student visa.
How to create a CV and Highlights video that open doors
The Highlights video
- Length: 3 to 5 minutes max.
- Best stuff first: Put your 3 best actions in the first 30 seconds.
- Identification: Use a circle or arrow to mark who you are.
- Variety: Don’t only show goals. Include recoveries, vision and transitions.
The Sports CV
- Physical data (height, weight, dominant foot, positions).
- Club history (seasons, levels and minutes played).
- Key achievements (promotions, top scorer, call-ups).
And if I’m not picked? Handling the “No”
Failing a trial is not the end of your career, just one data point. Many pros were rejected several times before making it.
- Ask for feedback: Ask the coach: “What specifically should I improve?”.
- Analyse your performance: Did you fail because of nerves (mental), fatigue (physical) or game concept (tactical)?
- Follow Plan B: If you are not ready today, your path is a development academy.
